valley vintage + cupcakes

Photography by Harrison Hurwitz

Phoenix has got some really really cool things goin' on.  I'm just so excited...

"The Valley Vintage fashion experience is on its way - purchase your tickets and help support the Florence Crittenton Foundation"...I saw this on the See Saw blog.  Think Mad Men's popularity had anything to do with it? {wink + smile}

This is another awesome valley event that I really don't want to miss: Cupcake Love In
(also at the Valley Ho).  The money from this event goes completely to a women's shelter.  This event is co-organized by the lovely Tracey Dempsey who was a customer of mine way-back-when at Cowboy Ciao when I worked for RW Smith.  She's so cool.  She's the one who makes that famous bacon pecan brittle.

I just can't wait!!

Delectably Divine

These are so darling.  I love the meringue looking decoration on the first one.  I could totally recreate that for a pretty birthday cake for little Gretchen by just topping a cake with little meringues and then some candies on top.  Oh, and these look delicious too.

Eat, Drink And Be Merry Chandelier

I'm in the market for a chandelier for my dining room and I just think this is so slick.  I don't have 5,000 bucks.  Poo.  Still, it's pretty to look at.

Here's another:

so cool.

summertime!

My friends around the country are talking about finally having Summer weather and they're having or anticipating gorgeous outdoor meals like this.  We, unfortunately, are not about to do that here.  I've talked about our heat just like blizzards in Minnesota.  We're sorta stuck in the house.  Plus, with a little baby, I'm even more so.  Oh well, we can all look forward to night like this...I'll just be thinking more like October. :)

Olivia Palermo for Vogue UK

'kay, so I don't know who Olivia Palermo is but she has totally great style.  I'll be trying to recreate these outfits as I have occasion to get out of the house. :)

The Farm

I've not been posting pretty pictures of all the fabulous food that comes from Crooked Sky 'cause I have a little teeny baby and it's 5 million degrees out.  So, here's a look back at what I was doing at the farm last year.

Starting at the top left {clockwise}

1. Patrick riding a Gator with me so we can take pictures and survey the fields {so we can blog about it}
2. The Chile Roaster.  It smells so good when we roast chiles for our members.  We also have a corn roaster.
3. Some baby corn stalks
4. I can't see, maybe baby radishes.  And yes that's the freeway in the distance.  This particular piece of farmland has been farmed since the 1920's.  It's pretty awesome...the definition of urban farm.  Outstanding in the Field even held a dinner here {I was out on maternity leave then}.  Pictures below.
5 & 6. Tonia and Farmer Frank checking out the native green onions that we grow {i'itoi's}
7. A backhoe. I was taking a picture for Frank.  We got a ticket for driving a backhoe on the streets.  I helped try to deal with the ticket by researching state and federal rules for farm implements on streets.  Ya, that was part of my job too.

Phoenix Living

I must admit that I really miss living in North County San Diego.  I miss the beach a lot.  I finally went to Cardiff State Beach and I think it's my new favorite.  Driving back to the heat was hard.  But all the things that I love most in the world are here.  My husband, our house, our pets, our friends, our old hangouts.

I've lived here 10 years now and you'd think I've been everywhere already.  Well, I definitely haven't.  I think I've found my niche here.  I'm so happy staying at home with the kids, working part-time for a farm (keeping my foot in the local food scene), and loving finding lovely local places that are oh-so special.

I love The Willows. Pane Bianco. Joe's Real BBQThe Coffee Shop at AgritopiaLuci's.

I recently took a quick trip to Mesa to see Found and Domestic Bliss.  Beautiful, right?

And there are so many places I have yet to discover.  Here are a few places I can't wait to go:

See, Phoenix is pretty great.  Now look what you're missing...{wink}

Sweet Peas

I'm buried under a pile of laundry and mess after being gone for 3 weeks.  What fun weeks they were.  I am happy to be home.  I love my home, it's just a bit messy.  I will be posting more when I can figure out how to juggle the kids take a shower by myself and just get a bit more settled :)

Naked books

Coco + Kelly's blog introduced me to Coralie Bickford-Smith. She is the very talented senior cover designer at Penguin Books and boy does she make some pretty stuff.

Looking at this is motivating me to do what Alexis did with her books on her bookshelf one evening.  Though I'm nervous to do it myself...for what reason, I don't know.  I think my books would look much sexier on the shelf like this:

Annie Selke Fabrics

I'm a new fan of Annie Selke's fabric collection. I've always been so picky with patterns but I really like these.  If I were an interior designer these would be a great go-to.

This chair is upholstered in scramble and I just love it!

Here are a few other designs I'm liking from the line:
